Attar's great mystical poem opens when all the bird of the world gather together to begin the search for an ideal king.

What follows is a marvelous allegorical rendering of sufism -- the secretive and paradoxical form of Islamic mysticism. Like The Caterbury Tales, The Conference of the Birds consists of a group of stories bound together by a pilgrimage. The Way of the sufi is expounded here in tales that are often riddling and sometimes obscure, but full of incident and suspense, laced with quick character sketches and witty vignettes of everyday life in twelfth-century Persia. Above all, though, the poem puts into words themes of love and the search for divine unity; in conveying these Attar' has transformed belief into poetry, much in the same way that Milton or Dante did'.

The Prophet represent the acme of Kahlil Gibran's achievment. Writing in English, Gibran adopted the tone and cadence of King James I's Bible, fusing his personalised Christian philosopy with a spirit and oriental wisdom that derives from the richly mixed influences of his native Lebanon. His language has a breath-taking beauty.

Before returning to his birthplace, Almustafa, the 'prophet', is asked for guidance by the people of Orphalese. His words, redolent with love and understanding, call for universal unity, and affirm Gibran's certainty of the correlated nature of all existence, and reincarnation.

The Prophet has never lost its immidiate appeal and has become a ubiquitous touchstone of spiritual literature.

(A. Teeuw. Modern Indonesian Literature II)

(Muhammad Hj. Saleh, Walking Westward in The Morning)

Hidup di zaman edan
gelap jiwa bingung pikiran

The Flowers of Evil, which T.S Elliot called the greatest example of modern poetry in any language, shocked the literary world of the nineteenth-century France with its outspoken portrayal of lesbian love, its linking of sexuality and death, its unremitting irony, and its unflinching celebration of the seamy side of urban life. The volume was seized by the police, and Baudelaire and his publisher were put on trial for offence to public decency. Six offending poems were banned, in a conviction that was not overturned until 1949.

This bold new translation, which restores the banned poems to their original places and reveals the full richness and variety of the collection, make available to English speakers a powerful and original vision of the world. Jonathan Culler's introduction outlines this vision, stressing that Baudelair is more than just the poet of the modern city. Originally to be called "The Lesbians". The Flowers of Evil contains the most extraordinary body of love poetry.

"... I was raised in a traditional environment... I heard sermons in the languages of the Gospel... I heard songs of the people, I heard their music... I was exposed to the poetic ideas and literary forms withput theory. That is how my poetic sensitivity was shaped..."

"... At certain moments in time, I've had inspiration; I've written some poems and so on, in the midst of my daily routine, I've been called a poet. I have felt like I'm living in the world of the poet and yet, at the same time, I am an inseperable part of the world around me. There's never a guarantee that inspiration will come or that the wave of creativity will repeat itself. A poet is constantly torn apart by doubt, by the hope and fear of his expectation that by preparing himself, that by nurturing his sensitivity, he will be ready to write whenever inspiration calls..."

Gubahan Pecinta [A Travel Guide] adalah buku berisi syair-syair gubahan Syekh Fattaah.

"...there is such a single-minded purity in her tone and images, living speech which transcends the familiar anguish of the neurotic to take on the blaze and exhilariting candor of one who totally accepts her fate; who, touching rock bottom, rises like phoenix. Wife, mother, poet, all that she was, none of that can compete with her cold, fierce destiny, a world where 'the mirrors are sheeted' and 'fixed stars/Govern a life'. Crossing the Water, a collection of poems written just prior to those in Ariel, while not as astonishing as Sylvia plath's last classic volume, is, nevertheless of immense importance in recording her extraordinary development. One senses on every page a voice coming into its own, the chaos of a lifetime at last getting ready to assume its final, thriumphant shape." -- Kirkus Reviews, 1971--

"...these poems are uniquely transitional. The intense control and the maturity found here are not matched in the earlier, youthful Colossus or in the later, tortured Ariel. This short middle period gives us Plath at her most sophisticated and skilled; there are even occasional flashes of humor and tenderness. But the movement in the final poems os inexorably toward Ariel, away from a somewhat detached vision of likeness [similes abound in the bulk of the poems] to the chaotic power of identity, to the kind of oneness that either destroys or saves the self. The cult feeds on the poet's pathology, loves her risks and her most daring, Ariel poems. Calling Crossing the Water Plath's finest collection might be heresy and is probably wrong; as usual, it would surely say as much about the reader as the poet." -- Antioch Review, 1972
